Dry skin can be caused from a lack of oil in which case the sebaceous glands don't produce enough sebum (oil), or it can be moisture-deficient which leads to dehydration of the surface layers. Dry skin can be seen in people of all ages. Characteristics of dry skin include a dull appearance, pale to white in color, thin skin with very small pores, and evidence of dead skin cells and flaking. Dry skin usually has a sensation of feeling tight and may be rough in texture. It is also more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Use of proper cleansers, gentle exfoliation, and moisturizers are imperative to eliminate the causes of superficial dryness and to restore the moisture content of the skin's top layer.
